Posting Your Resume Online

Although a resume bank allows you to build your resume right on the site, it's not a good idea to do so. Here's why.

Why Not Build Your Resume on a Resume Site?
Most resume sites offer three options for submitting a resume:

  1. Build your resume right on the website.
  2. Upload an MS Word document of your resume.
  3. Copy and paste your Plain Text resume.

Let's examine these three options to determine which is the best method for you.

Option 1: Build Your Resume On the Website
This option is not recommended for the following reasons:

  • It's very easy to have typos if you type directly into the site's form. Working first in your word processing program (which has spell check) can greatly improve your chances of having a perfect resume.
  • The form may force you to have a resume format that you don't want to have. For instance, most online resume builders insist that you create a chronological resume (a format that focuses on work history). But if you're changing careers, you may be put at a disadvantage because the system doesn't allow you to build a functional or combination resume (formats that focus on skills).
  • Because the resume bank is on a website, you cannot easily save your resume for other uses.

Let's look at two other options for getting your resume onto the resume site.
