Job Numbers and Growth

About 71,000 vet technicians are working in the US. Unemployment for workers ranks very low among occupations in the US. In 2008, 2% of employees were not able to find jobs.

Area Job Conditions

Popular cities for employees include Fort Collins (Colorado), Athens (Georgia), and Gainesville (Florida), and the least popular are Baton Rouge (Louisiana), Washington (District of Columbia), and St. Louis (Missouri).

Vet technicians looking for high paying jobs should consider Oakland (California), Poughkeepsie (New York), and Jefferson City (Missouri), and avoid Albany (Georgia), Wheeling (West Virginia), and Tuscaloosa (Alabama).

Training and Education

Workers often get an associate degree before beginning their career. About 16% of employees have four year degrees. Vet technicians that went to college (but did not get a bachelor's degree) are about 57% of the total. Some workers, about 27%, did not pursue education beyond high-school.
