Job Numbers and Growth

There are an estimated 49,000 tech writers nationally. Recent data shows the joblessness for workers is very high compared to other jobs. An estimated 8% of employees were not able to find a job in 2008.

Area Job Conditions

The highest density of tech writers are found in Warner Robins (Georgia), Framingham (Massachusetts), and Lowell (Massachusetts). The lowest density occurs around Columbia (South Carolina), Greensboro (North Carolina), and Nashville (Tennessee).

Compensation for workers is highst in San Jose (California), Framingham (Massachusetts), and San Francisco (California), and is the lowest in Springfield (Missouri), Missoula (Montana), and Port St. Lucie (Florida).

Training and Education

Employers tend to prefer to hire employees that have a bachelor's degree. in 74% of cases, tech writers have four year degrees or better. Among workers 18% pursued some additional career education without completing a bachelor's degree. In 7% of cases, employees have only a high school education.
