Job Numbers and Growth

Nationally, there are 131,000 working as real estate brokers. This occupation has a very low ranking for joblessness. The jobless rate for employees was about 1% in 2008.

Area Job Conditions

Real estate brokers per capita is greatest in Palm Coast (Florida), Kingman (Arizona), and Wilmington (North Carolina). Fort Worth (Texas), Austin (Texas), and Cleveland (Ohio) have the fewest per capita.

The highest salaries for workers are found in San Francisco (California), New York (New York), and Atlanta (Georgia), and the lowest-paying areas are in Fayetteville (North Carolina), Boise (Idaho), and Greenville (North Carolina).

Training and Education

Work experience in a related occupation is generally expected for employees. Recent data shows that 45% of real estate brokers have a degree. Workers with some schooling beyond high school, but not a four college degree, represent about 37% of the total. A high school diploma or GED, without further education, is held by 18% of employees.
